Project Title: Horizons 6-week Summer Program
Project Description:
Horizons at CT State Norwalk provides a 6-week, full-day, tuition-free summer program, including academic instruction, enrichment opportunities, social emotional education, field trips, mentoring and guidance. The ultimate goal of the Summer Program is to prevent summer slide for our 120 students and prepare them for success in school. Teachers engage students in small groups and emphasize essential academic skills to maximize students’ abilities and self-confidence. Our curriculum complements the Norwalk Public Schools standards while incorporating project-based learning. Students spend the morning rotating through classroom literacy, small group math work and individualized "pull out" instruction with reading specialists and math specialists. The staff to student ratio is 1:4, allowing for teachers to know their students, meet them where they are, and adapt instruction to their learning styles. It is our goal to foster a love of learning in our students and to build their confidence in the classroom.
Providing impactful and age-appropriate specials for our students is also a key aspect of Horizons at CT State Norwalk. Students engage in specials including STEAM, music, dance, art, martial arts, and cooking. All students jump into the New Canaan YMCA pool 2-3 times a week for swim instruction. The importance of swimming as a life skill is well documented, especially for Horizons’ students, most of whom come to us not knowing how to swim. In addition to developing their skills in the water, our swimmers learn to trust, take risks and become more confident, habits that spill over into the classroom.
Students receive daily transportation to and from the program, and a nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack. Food insecurity is a very real concern for our students and their families; they rely on Horizons for this support during the summer months when school is closed.
