Project Title: STEM mentoring
Project Description:

C4K, in partnership with 120+ community volunteers, serves 100-150 youth residing in poverty in 6th- 12th grades. Additionally, C4K plans to extend its impact to older youth.

What: With your support, C4K will enhance its existing programs for youth, offering mentoring in a creative, safe, supportive out-of-school learning environment. We will also develop programming for high school and older youth, working to keep them engaged and providing college and career readiness, leadership development, and community engagement.

When: C4K offers year-round programming.

Where: Currently, all program services take place at the C4K Clubhouse. The Clubhouse is located in downtown Charlottesville near Kindlewood, South 1st Street, and 6th Street, low-income housing developments where many of the youth we serve live. Expanded programming could take place at partner schools or other community locations.

Why: C4K’s programs aim to build confidence, strengthen STEM identity, and increase access to social capital for all youth. By tailoring programs to the unique needs of older youth, C4K hopes to better prepare them for academic and vocational success.

How: Grant funds will be allocated to support enhancing existing programs and the development of new initiatives. This includes program development, recruitment of older youth and mentors, stipends for youth leaders, and field trip opportunities. This comprehensive approach will address the diverse needs of both age groups and maximize the impact of C4K’s mission. By investing in existing and new programs, C4K will utilize the grant funds to effectively address youths’ specific challenges and aspirations at different grade levels, contributing to their holistic development and future success.

Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): C4K has just begun grant applications for FY25 (the year related to this grant). We have applied to the City of Charlottesville ($16,000)and Albemarle County ($16,000) and await decisions. We have plans to apply to Bank of America (10,000), Best Buy ($60,000), and Northrop Grumman. In addition to grant writing, C4K will remain proactive in exploring partnerships, seeking new avenues for community engagement, and identifying potential funding sources to ensure our programs’ long-term success and sustainability.
