Project Title: Youth Development Program
Project Description:
Established in 1937, the mission of Children’s Beach House is “to improve the lives of children, youth, families, and communities by helping them to identify, understand, and utilize their own strengths, talents, and resources.” Our flagship program, the Youth Development Program, provides year-round support to children from under-resourced homes who also have speech and language delays. These are children who are marginalized at school and have few social and emotional supports. Consequently, they are at risk for engaging in risky behaviors, such as experimenting with sex, drugs, and alcohol, and dropping out of school. The Youth Development Program is comprised of three components:
Year-round support from family engagement coordinators (FECs) who help each child identify their strengths, talents, and resources and access whatever additional supports the child needs to thrive. This support is provided in collaboration with each child’s teachers and learning specialists and in concert with their Individual Education Plan (IEP).
Enrichment activities with other YDP participants in their age groups. These activities take place after school, evenings, and weekends near the children’s homes, and once a month, over weekends, at CBH’s Lewes Beach facility during the school year. These activities are a mix of recreational and social activities to help the children develop friendships and supportive relationships, community service activities to help the children understand their importance and responsibility to the larger community; and skills exploration and development.
Week-long camp sessions at CBH’s Lewes Beach facility (a total of three weeks for elementary and middle schoolers; two weeks for high schoolers). Activities include: swimming lessons and free swim sessions, sailing, kayaking, teambuilding activities, boating, therapeutic horseback riding, arts and crafts, ceramics, marine science, academic enrichment, music, drama, sports/games, community and volunteer service projects, and — for high school-age children — career exploration and job readiness skills development.
