Project Title: K.I.N.D.E.R.(Kids in Need of Durable Equipment Right now) Project
Project Description:

Since its inception in 2011, the K.I.N.D.E.R Project has provided almost $3 million worth of medical equipment to over 4,000 pediatric patients. Without access to such equipment, the health of many of these children would drastically deteriorate. Our equipment helps bring back some normalcy for the children we serve, often allowing them to walk the halls of their schools and be included in recreational activities with their peers.
Providing children with access to adaptive equipment that their doctors have prescribed for them- but cannot otherwise obtain- continues to be a critical part of the health care continuum, as it increases their quality of life. When intercepted at an early age, DME can provide therapeutic benefits and improved quality of life. This life-changing equipment can be used to support, stabilize, or immobilize certain body parts, thus assisting with improved mobility and is critical to a child’s present development. Not only a benefit for the present, DME also has the power of offering a child a better life experience in the future.
For example, providing an infant who has cerebral palsy with appropriate braces from an early age can prevent deformity, enabling the child to learn to walk. Without these braces, as a child grows, they often become debilitated. This causes permanent damage to their muscles and nerves, preventing them from ever walking on their own.
Additionally, families and caregivers need equipment that is lightweight, convenient, and easy to handle while providing comfort, safety and mobility for their child. Such equipment can be so expensive that even a family with good insurance can have difficulty obtaining it. For example, insurance companies will not cover both a wheelchair and an adaptive transit stroller, but a child with special needs almost always needs both to ensure their health, safety, mobility, independence, and dignity.
