Project Title: Food is Medicine
Project Description:

Tulsa Cornerstone Assistance Network’s YouthWorks initiative is making a significant impact on over 200 young people in North Tulsa. These children and teenagers face various challenges, including academic struggles, poverty, food insecurity and diet related health conditions. We provide a 30 week afterschool program, Christmas and Spring Break Camp and 10 week summer camp aimed to bridge the opportunity gap and break the cycle of disadvantage. We believe that we can have the greatest impact in our community by educating our youth and empowering them to cultivate change.
We prioritize balanced nutrition and well-being as keys to success. Through our innovative multi-ponics greenhouse and medical garden, we offer immersive educational experiences for our after school program that focuses on nutrition and sustainable food production. The youth gain hands on experience that include regenerative farming, nutrition education, and healthy eating to prevent and overcome childhood obesity.
Our “Food is Medicine” project will be to enhance and expand our gardens, through our Multic-Ponic greenhouse and our outdoor medical gardens. The harvest from our gardens will be carefully packed into food boxes, which will be delivered every two weeks to 50 families facing financial challenges within our community. Furthermore, we are extending this assistance to include families of the youth enrolled in our afterschool program. To complement this initiative, we will introduce a structured curriculum aimed at educating young individuals about the nutritional advantages of various foods and instilling preventative health measures to address disparities. Additionally, we will offer cooking classes tailored for both youth and their families. A dedicated health and fitness coach will engage with the participants on a weekly basis to establish and achieve individualized health objectives. Ultimately, our project aims to scale up produce production annually, enabling us to extend support to an additional 50 families each year.
