Project Title: 2024-24 Scholaship Training for the Enrichment of Primary Students (STEPS) Program
Project Description:
Established in 1992, Orlando Ballet’s three-level Scholarship Training for the Enrichment of Primary Students (STEPS) program provides free dance classes, scholarship opportunities, and dance education training to teachers and students from Title I schools and underserved communities in Orange, Osceola, Lake, Seminole, and Volusia Counties serving students from pre-school through 12th grade. STEPS is divided into three distinct levels, depending on age: First STEPS is a 10-week residency by OB Teaching Artists that provides dance education training for early childhood educators and visits from OB artists for their pre-school/kindergarten students. STEPS is a 13-week residency by OB Teaching Artists offering free dance classes, dancewear, and scholarship opportunities to 2nd through 5th grade students; and Real Education in the Arts Communicating Hope (REACH) is a 13-week residency by OB Teaching Artists, offering free dance classes and dancewear to 6th through 12th grade students.
During the program, students learn different styles of dance including ballet, jazz, and contemporary. STEPS and REACH participants have the opportunity to participate in a final Graduation/Performance Showcase on their last day of class.
Upon graduation from STEPS and REACH, students receive complimentary tickets to an Orlando Ballet mainstage performance at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts and select students are offered scholarships to attend Orlando Ballet School’s Spring or Summer Dance Camps. Students who show promise and who qualify financially are awarded full scholarships to attend OBS the following academic year.
The overarching goal of the STEPS program is to improve social and academic outcomes for participating students through the transformative power of dance and instill a lifelong love of the performing arts.
