Project Title: L.O.V.E. Mentoring Program
Project Description:
The L.O.V.E. Mentoring Program serves as a preventative and motivational program that emboldens young women to believe in themselves and in their self-worth, and in the ability to achieve their ambitious goals. The L.O.V.E. school-based model is delivered during the academic year in Health Studies or aligned classes in partner public schools in NYC. L.O.V.E. is implemented as a class for girls only with specific instruction that covers social and emotional content, and addresses health education standards. From September to June, mentors and mentees participate in weekly, hour-long sessions, guided by a curriculum that consists of four core components: mental health, reproductive health, college access, and career readiness. L.O.V.E. Program Associates teach the mentoring sessions. L.O.V.E. mentors are female university students who provide group mentoring to program participants during classes. A teacher from each partner school is also present in the classroom.
The L.O.V.E. Mentoring Program provides a space for young women to learn how to strive personally and academically through positive reinforcement, consistency, and understanding. The L.O.V.E. mental health and wellness curriculum covers topics such as self-love, self-awareness, exercise, and meditation. The reproductive health curriculum addresses themes like healthy relationships, friendships, and safe sex. The college and career readiness sections of the curriculum focus on college application, financial aid, and scholarships along with opportunities to attend career panels, corporate site visits, and college tours. In addition, because many of the young women we serve are new immigrants, L.O.V.E. offers English Language Learning support for students to enhance their vocabulary, reading, and comprehension levels.
