Project Title: Beyond the Badge
Project Description:

The North Carolina Community of Coalitions (NC3) aims to empower and support community groups in their efforts to enhance the holistic quality of life for residents of affiliate NC3 communities. As we value long-term community development guided by strong community coalitions, with committed and effective partners, we want nothing more than to strengthen the existing complex relationship between youth and law enforcement. Beyond the Badge is a monthly program initiative designed to build positive relationships and mutual understanding between youth aged 7-17 and police officers in Wake Forest, NC (Wake County). Only 29% of young people nationally express trust in the police (Pew Research Center, 2022). This lack of trust can lead to fear, misunderstanding, and a breakdown in community safety. This disconnect also contradicts NC3’s commitment to strong community coalitions and hinders effective partnerships within our own communities.

Beyond the Badge presents a unique opportunity to address the critical issue of police-community relations in Wake County, NC. A recent study found that 41% of Wake County youth reported never having a positive interaction with a police officer outside of traffic stops. (Wake County Human Relations Commission, 2022 Youth Perception Survey). By engaging in shared activities, open dialogue, and community outreach, this program aims to build the desired trust, respect, and cooperation between these groups.

Program Structure:
Monthly Activities:
-Organized outings (3-on-3 basketball tournaments, museum visits, movie tickets, park clean-ups)
-Joint volunteering projects (food drives/neighborhood beautification initiatives) through our community partner organization, the Northeast Community Coalition (NECC)
-Family-friendly events

Quarterly Activities:
-Monthly parent sessions to address concerns and provide tools for parents to navigate conversations about police with their children and encourage their participation in program activities.

Expected Outcomes:
-Increased trust between youth and police officers
-Improved communication between community members and police officers
-Enhanced community safety

Total Project Budget: 20,000
