Project Title: Emergency Foster Shelter
Project Description:
The Emergency Foster Shelter Program provided by Grandma’s Place serves children that have suffered from abuse, mistreatment, and/or neglect & have been subsequently removed from their homes for their own safety by the Department of Children and Families and/or law enforcement.
Operating continuously through the year, the shelter has a capacity of 16 children per night and is licensed for children aged birth to 12 years old. GP is unique in Palm Beach County in that it accepts all children with disabilities, and it is the only one certified to care for both girls & boys ages birth to 7 years old. The shelter plays a critical role for these children, as most abuse victims are younger than six years old. The program serves an average of 50 children a year.
During their stay, the children reside in a secure, stable environment that enables them to heal & rebuild trust with others. They receive a psychological assessment & counseling as indicated. Registered dieticians develop meal plans which are followed by staff so that all children receive proper nutrition. Children have semi-private bedrooms with bright, kid-friendly décor, & a farmhouse kitchen table for meals and homework. These features help to make it feel as close to a real home as possible.
In addition to these features, Grandma’s Place tries to be no different from a conventional family. It is a lively household with skilled staff who ensure that the children feel safe & at ease. The staff members weave the details of home life, like school drop-offs, after-school extracurricular activities, and movie outings, into the shelter’s daily life, & the children keep a busy schedule. These efforts help to reach their larger goal: helping the children placed in their care recover from abuse and find long-term success.
