Project Title: BBEST Program (Black and Brown Excellence Student Teams)
Project Description:

Black/Brown Excellence Student Teams (B/BEST) is a chance for Black and/or Brown students to come together in affinity (race, gender, and age) with a Black/Brown adult facilitator and, ideally, a Black/Brown, high-school co-facilitator, in a structured and loving setting to celebrate and honor their identities, to learn about Black/Brown excellence, to receive social and emotional support, and to feel more connected to their school communities. Facilitators provide wellness check-ins, affirmations, and Afro-centric/Latin-centric lessons around community, family, and dignity. And facilitators become another adult on campus who knows a child well.

Participating students will meet one hour a week.
• Groups will be no more than 8 students each.
• Participating students will be grouped by their self-identified gender.
• Groups will be facilitated by an approved adult mentor who will meet with other facilitators each month to review curriculum.
• Themes will be covered in three-week rotations for each group.
• Themes will be guided by developmental needs and may include community, identity, relationships, physical development, social-emotional well-being, intellectual development, justice, cultural pride, etc.
• Content will be grade and developmentally appropriate and will include engaging in a relevant read-aloud, (week 1), participating in a circle discussion about how to support each other to succeed (week 2), and learning about a model of excellence from the Latinx community (week 3).
