Project Title: Homeless Unaccompanied Minor Advocate
Project Description:
CIS was founded as a social justice organization over 40 years ago. Our purpose is to provide resources and supports for historically marginalized students to address inequalities prevalent in our educational system. The project we are requesting funding for is our focus on homeless High School students.
Homelessness is a devastating circumstance for anyone, but for youth on their own, known as unaccompanied minors, the stresses are multiplied. The myriad of challenges faced, and multilayered trauma puts this vulnerable population at-risk of academic failure and 87% more likely of dropping out of school and those without a high school diploma are 4.5 times more likely to experience homelessness later in life.
Last school year, there were over 70 homeless unaccompanied minors identified in the Renton School District. These were students under age 18 without a legal guardian and did not have a permanent address., three years ago the school district approached us to explore how we can provide these students the unique supports they need to achieve their full potential,
Over the last three years, there has been a 110% increase in unaccompanied minors identified within the Renton School District – these are students under age 18 without a legal guardian and did not have a permanent address. With this vulnerable population increasing every year and not getting the funding or support they need, three years ago we implemented a position solely dedicated to working with this population. This position travels to all four Renton high schools and meets weekly with a caseload of 50+ to discuss and develop strategies to overcome challenges they are facing, monitor academic progress to ensure graduation, and develop post high school plans. Since implementing this position, 190 unaccompanied minors have been case-managed and 71 were seniors who all graduated on-time.
