Project Title: More Efficiency for Minnesota Milk Bank for Babies
Project Description:
The Minnesota Milk Bank for Babies (MMBB) mission is to improve infant health outcomes by ensuring that medically vulnerable babies in MN have access to safely pasteurized life-giving donor human milk (PDHM) when mother’s milk is unavailable or in low supply. MMBB is accredited by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) and is licensed by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture as a food manufacturer to ensure the safety and quality of our PDHM in consideration of the fragile health status of the babies we serve.
MMBB operates a milk bank facility that processes donor human milk for distribution to our network of over forty hospitals, birth centers, and health system outpatient distribution sites. The donated milk comes from lactating mothers who have extra milk beyond what their children need and voluntarily provide it to the MMBB without compensation. Our focus is providing safe and high-quality human milk as a critical resource for our community’s most fragile babies and their families. Conditions related to prematurity, particularly necrotizing enterocolitis and other medical issues, make PDHM medically necessary for reducing illness and death. Other conditions such as malabsorption or gastrointestinal disorders, formula intolerance, or congenital anomalies are some situations where babies greatly benefit from the nutritional and immunologic support of donor milk.
MMBB seeks support to purchase new bottle-sealing equipment to respond efficiently to the growing demand for PDHM. Since 2020, we have distributed over 180,000 bottles of milk, all sealed by hand by our lab technicians. A new bottle sealer would make us more efficient with time by sealing bottles faster. Support from the Hermanowski Foundation would make an impact on our efforts. This is crucial for safeguarding the quality and food safety standards of PDHM, enabling us to provide life-saving assistance to medically vulnerable infants.
