Project Title: TCP Academic & Emotional Mentoring
Project Description:
Math and English proficiency is a severe challenge in the communities TCP serves. In schools where TCP delivers programming, only 16.7% of elementary and 9.6% of middle school students are grade-proficient in math. Regarding English proficiency, only 33.1% of elementary and 39.6% of middle school students in Brooklyn Park are grade-proficient in English.
Brooklyn Park is a designated food and digital desert, with just under 25% of residents living under the poverty line; more than 60% of families are single-parent led, and both are impacted by severely poor air quality from pollution. With Brooklyn Park having the largest growing Hispanic population in the county, language barriers create significant hurdles for Hispanic youth, who often get overlooked and pushed through the academic system.
To combat the alarming numbers in math and reading deficiency, the TCP Academic & Emotional (A&E) Mentoring program provides targeted 2nd-5th-grade students with positive role models during the school day to assist and tutor students five days per week. Mentors’ primary focus is assisting students with their schoolwork during English/Language Arts and Math classes and, when needed, assisting students in the other two core subjects (Science & Social Studies).
Mentors also conduct lunch bunch daily, working one-on-one or in small groups of up to six students. Lunch bunch time consists of students completing worksheets tailored to their specific academic needs, teaching and reinforcing students’ writing skills to improve spelling, and social & emotional learning activities focused on building positive communication and emotional response habits.
