Project Title: A Book for Every Student
Project Description:
We are seeking funding to implement the “A Book for Every Student” project. The community that Low Income Student Aid, Inc. serves has its share of socio-economic challenges in rural northern Arizona due to lack of services. Many families live in poverty or are homeless and this has an impact, resulting in multiple academic deficits. The students we assist attend four Title 1 schools in the Verde Valley. These schools have between 68% – 82% of students qualifying for free and reduced school lunches. If funded, we anticipate this project having an impact of being able to put a book in 1,521 student’s hands. The total cost for this project is $15,210. We are asking $10,000 from the Hermanowski Foundation and are committed to raise the additional $5,210 needed.
Many of these students have never been able to purchase something from the book fair at school. Each student will receive a voucher for one $10 book of their choice. Every book purchased at the book fair helps each school library earn points to purchase new books, so we see this as a double win! Books develop and nourish kids’ imaginations, expanding their worlds. Having books in the home is proven to positively benefit children in a myriad of ways. A two-decade long study found that the mere presence of a home library increases children’s academic success, vocabulary development, attention, and job attainment.
Total Project Budget: $15,210
