Project Title: Empowered Beginnings
Project Description:
Empowering and preparing justice-impacted young parents-to-be (ages 14-22) by helping them transform their lives (and their children) with knowledge, skills, community resources, and providing them with the tools necessary to successfully realize and achieve their full purpose.
Program Overview
Summary:
3 -10-week program sessions to equip young parents and parents-to-be for confident early parenthood.
Sessions, mentorship, and resources that will aim to:
• Build knowledge and confidence to prepare for the future.
• Build resilience and coping mechanisms to reduce stress and anxiety.
• Develop communication and conflict resolution skills.
• Increase knowledge of infant care, child raising, and financial planning.
• Foster a supportive network of peers and mentors.
Impact:
Addresses unique and individual needs for each participant, aiming to:
• Increase educational and employment opportunities.
• Reduce child abuse and neglect risks.
• Break the cycle of poverty and intergenerational disadvantage.
• Improve child health outcomes.
• Encourage staying in school or continuing education.
Program Design:
10 weekly sessions: 1.5 hours each, covering stress management, communication, financial planning,
childcare, and other support networks.
• Small group setting: 8-10 participants for personalized attention and to ensure urgent needs and long-term goals are met.
• Expert facilitators: Certified professionals in youth development and parenting including childcare experts, fatherhood advisors, educators, and medical professionals.
• Take-away resources: Informative pamphlets for each session, speakers, and demonstrations.
• Mentorship opportunities: One-on-one connections with experienced parents and professionals who will be able to spend time and encouragement with the young adult.
• Guest speakers: Experts on child health, baby care, education and trades and relevant topics.
•Fun activities: Icebreakers, discussions, role-playing for engagement and learning.
