Project Title: C.R.O.P.S. Atlantic City Food Security Plan
Project Description:

CROPS’ Atlantic City Food Security Plan is a scalable program with multiple goals of (1) decreasing food insecurity and related chronic disease rates, (2) creating a vibrant, marketable economy based on the farm-to-fork movement, (3) building opportunities for residents to work within the food system, creating a more sustainable local food economy, (4) revitalizing vacant and blighted properties throughout the City and (5) creating a happier, safer environment with sustainable prosperity for all. The introduction and strategic placement of outdoor farms and native plant gardens in Atlantic City will mitigate the negative impact of flooding and environmental degradation in the long run. These goals will be achieved in the first year by establishing farm businesses across the City and catalyzing them as small businesses. Educational programming, technical assistance, and training of both consumers and producers will be a central feature of first-year programming. CROPS will assist new farmers in securing wholesale contracts with existing businesses like corner stores, restaurants, and schools. Technical assistance and educational programs for future farmers will strengthen program goals. In future years, shared community-owned resources such as tool sheds, vehicles, and community kitchens will be established. CROPS will provide annual internship opportunities for the youth and residents of Atlantic City as pathways to earn income while learning how to develop micro-businesses. This program provides pathways linking Atlantic City’s residents and small business owners to the City’s anchor casino and tourism industry. At the same time, the program will provide services that help Atlantic City and its residents become healthier, more self-sufficient, and environmentally aware. Essentially, CROPS programming will install a food system where one does not exist, complementing other industries and adding an accessible grocery source. Together, these programs will provide ongoing access to real food for the residents of Atlantic City.
