Project Title: Bridging The Gap I Am Financially Savvy Educational Mentoring Program
Project Description:

Destiny Bound Bridging the Gap mentorship is created to provide academic enrichment for Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC), with the aim of reducing the social imbalance. It is also aimed at helping to build personal development, life skills, and strengthen relationships amongst participants by informing and educating. We will inform our mentees on the pitfalls of being financially dependent on a system developed to handicap people of color systemically. Educating our participants on financial literacy. We must alter the mentality of our younger generation so that they may make impactful changes in their life and community.

Financial stability, independence, and education are critical factors in removing oneself from the chokehold often plagued by lower-income communities. A lack of financial knowledge impacts an individual’s finances, lifestyle and often comes with biases in the economic arena. Lending institutions have negative preconceptions of those living in marginalized communities, which is reflected in their policies. Financial exclusion directly and significantly impacts economic development in one’s community. It reveals how one begins to feel about their community and themselves. Illiteracy, lack of education, and lack of financial knowledge also affect how one manages their finances and prospers in life. As the saying goes, knowledge is power. It is our job to educate our youth, so they can break the cycle of becoming entangled in debt, interrupt the continuum of multi-generational poverty, and Bridge the Gap.

I Am Financially Savvy – financial literacy courses teach basic monetary concepts on saving, budgeting, credit, investing, fraud, borrowing, owning financial stability, ROI (Return of Investment – measuring ROI on a college loan vs. college major), and the importance of staying in school and tertiary education. Teaching fiscal responsibility opens one’s cognitive thought process and conscious awareness of how we spend and manage our finances.
