Project Title: J.E Storey Performing Arts for Youth Program
Project Description:

J.E Storey Performing Arts for Youth is a cutting-edge program geared to youth seeking to unlock their dreams, desires, and potential. Year-round after-school and Summer programs include academics infused with performing arts, life skills, financial literacy, mentorship, and entrepreneurship. Wrap-around services are provided after school and on some weekends; grades Kindergarten to 8th).
Mentors also visit youth in school to monitor progress and meet with parents and students to provide accountability in reaching goals. Supportive services currently include transport from neighboring schools and nutritional snacks to help participants focus on skill-building and program participation. With funding from this grant opportunity, Sunrise Empowerment Center (SEC) plans to increase our capacity to serve more at-risk youth to include intensive case management for families as well.
Mentoring Sessions-As a strategy to address ACEs, SCE intends to connect youth to caring adults in the form of Mentors and introduce activities such as Group Mentoring to help reduce risky behavior and reduce contact with law enforcement, courts, jails, and prisons. Mentoring Coaches will facilitate sessions using the trauma-informed approach to help participants identify and address barriers to success and the appropriate interventions (SAMSHA’S Concept of Trauma and Guidance for a Trauma-Informed Approach, 2014).
The Mentor and youth will review established goals and the mentor will provide support to further reduce risks and increase the chances of goal achievement. Sessions will be conducted in a variety of places with an emphasis on meeting participants where they are. The concept of meeting participants where they are, similar to patient-centered engagement, not only focuses on creating safe environments for open conversation but will also help to increase the quality-of-service provision to program participants (World Health Organization: Patient Engagement- Technical Series on Safer Primary Care, 2016).
