Project Title: Community Empowerment — Youth Leadership Development
Project Description:

THR Global Institute has developed the Community Improvement Project program that encourages youth and young adults to create community improvement projects that can effect positive change. Youth and young adults participating in the program, have collaborated on community improvement projects designed to address one or more of the common challenges faced by young people in the Bay Area, the U.S. and even in other countries.

As part of its community empowerment effort, Global Institute issues calls for the design of community improvement projects. Each community improvement project must potentially benefit a underserved community in the Bay Area, and other communities.. Applicants are encouraged to collaborate with someone in designing their project. At a minimum, each applicant must explain how their project might benefit a local underserved community in the Bay Area and an underserved community in another region. These calls for proposals specifically target youth living in underserved communities. THR Global Institute selects the projects that show the most promise and then provides seed money to help get the projects up and running. THR Global Institute provides technical assistance and skills building workshops to help bring the projects to life.

One example of a community improvement project supported by Global Institute is a project in which youth assisted with the construction of permanent bathrooms for a nursery school, replacing highly unsanitary portable bathrooms the children had been using.

In another example, youth proposed, and Global Institute supported, a computer literacy program for youth living in a marginalized community.

The goal of the project is to transform the lives of youth and young adults by providing them cultural exchange experiences and the tools needed to be the change they want to see in their communities.
