Project Title: Summer of Wellness, Confidence and Building Community
Project Description:

Through the sport of basketball, Grow Our Game teaches social-emotional learning skills and works to improve academic achievement during the critical stages of personal development for our future female leaders. We work hard to improve mental and physical health by promoting wellness through fitness. We meet with our girls twice a week where we teach basketball skills and practice them through various drills and exercises. Asthey are using their bodies as a vessel to play basketball, we teach our girls to take care of their bodies by prioritizing stretching both before and after practice to prevent any injuries. Additionally, we facilitate friendly scrimmage games which we call "open play" amongst our girls to promote themes of teamwork and sportsmanship which they then apply during our in house league competitions. Furthermore, we have seminars with our students in which we teach them self soothing strategies. Lastly, we provide our girls with a sense of community and sisterhood.As the only completely free program in NY of this sort, Grow Our Game serves girls in under resourced and underrepresented communities like Central Harlem, the South Bronx, and East New York. These communities are mostly comprised of low-income POC who without our programming may not have the means to pursue extracurricular activities. Sports have been proven to improve self-esteem, academic performance, and teach leadership skills like discipline and critical thinking to young girls, therefore, accessibility is important to us.
