Project Title: Pathways Youth Program
Project Description:

Pathways is a year-round youth program that serves school-age children living at Laura’s Home Women’s Crisis Center. Pathways provides an after-school program with homework help, access to a variety of cultural activities, and a series of discussions covering important life skills, designed to assist children’s growth in social-emotional learning. Pathways also offers a 10-week summer program featuring similar offerings, with the addition of local field trips and more outdoor activities.

Pathways is designed to present unique opportunities for students to learn about conflict resolution, healthy communication, development of coping strategies, maintaining physical health, and more. Children are assessed using best practice assessments like Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and MyStar, which help staff create individualized plans for each child.

Children who participate in the Pathways program also gain tools to assess their mental and emotional well-being and exit with the necessary connections for growth. Children attending Pathways go through the SELF (Safety, Emotions, Loss, Future) curriculum, covering the development of tools to help combat future trauma or stressors as well as methods for strengthening self-regulatory mechanisms and social-emotional skill development. As children progress through the curriculum, caseworkers measure the social-emotional skills of students through the MyStar assessment to determine the rate of progress and identify other areas that may need attention. These assessments guide staff and caseworkers as they make referrals to children for wraparound services.

During Fiscal Year 2023, Laura’s Home served 109 children in the Pathways program. Of the regularly participating students in Pathways, 42% demonstrated an increase in social-emotional skills. All youth in Pathways received individualized service plans and weekly meetings with social workers to determine appropriate goals and necessary wraparound services to pursue. During FY 2023, Laura’s Home helped 28 children maintain and/or obtain IEPs (Individualized Education Plans) through local school systems. In addition, children and families received 136 referrals for wraparound services with partnering organizations.

Caseworkers and staff also work to ensure that each child in the Pathways program at Laura’s Home achieves stable, regular school attendance, and receives educational support when needed. Pathways staff provide homework help, assist in creating and maintaining Individual Education Plans with local school systems, and work with numerous partner organizations to provide extra services to homeless students. Laura’s Home also provides students with materials for school, including backpacks, school supplies, and access to reliable internet.
