Project Title: Rural Youth Resources
Project Description:

Our mission is to ensure each child receives the physical, emotional, and intellectual support they need – in school, at home, and in the community – to learn well. Our service area includes six rural communities, two Tribal Nations, and three school districts within a geographical area of 1,000 square miles in rural San Diego County. We provide services to approximately 750 youth annually.

Our Family Resource Center takes a holistic approach to child wellbeing. We believe that when a caregiver feels seen and supported it’s easier for them to engage with and support their child’s needs. We connect families to county-based nutrition and health care programs. We alleviate general strains for health care coordination by scheduling campus-based dental screenings, eye exams, emotional health check-ins and monthly opportunities for youth to meet with UCSD Pediatric Residents. We partner with local food distribution organizations to provide kid friendly food bags to families experiencing food insecurity during the school year.
We provide grocery cards when more support is needed to meet the households nutritional needs. We also provide gas gift cards since most families have to travel almost 30 minutes one way to access a grocery store. Our center houses a kids clothes closet and diaper bank, to provide clothing, shoes and other basic necessities at no cost to families throughout the year.

Annually, we facilitate and organize various charitable events or programs to fulfill other needs of youth. In the Spring we partner with local summer camps to make enrichment opportunities more equitable for the youth we serve. In the fall we begin to coordinate our winter programs to provide warm winter jackets and alleviate the financial burden of the holidays.

We are seeking additional funding for our Family Resource programs to continue to provide these supports to the youth we serve.
