Project Title: Mobile STEM Labs: Transforming the lives of underserved youth
Project Description:

Mobile STEM Labs (MSL) is a hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) program geared towards positively impacting the lives of marginalized student in underserved communities. Mobile STEM Labs works to strengthen the STEM skills of participants and provides exposure to STEM careers through fun and engaging curriculum. The instructors are culturally diverse individuals with STEM backgrounds. The curriculum is aligned with Next Generation Science Standards to support the California Science Test (CAST) Preparation and Common Core standards to enhance English Language Arts skills through the use of Science terminology. Using Engineering as a foundation for each lesson, students are introduced to concepts in Life Science, Earth and Space Science, Aerospace Engineering, Technology and Physical Science in 60-minute lesson each week over the course of 12 weeks. Each Week Mobile STEM Labs enters the classrooms, either during school or after school, with all the necessary lab materials and supplies to help mitigate the access to quality lab materials that students face in their traditional school setting. At the start of each concept they review lab safety to ensure students remain safe at all times.

MSL strengthens academic skills of youth through fun and engaging STEM learning experiences. The curriculum is aligned with Next Generation Science Standards, which deepens and sustains student interest in science. At the start of each concept MSL reviews lab safety to ensure students remain safe at all times. MSL works to reverse and positively impact the: (1) the decades-long disparities in access to rigorous, relevant, and culturally affirming K-12th grade academic STEM learning and enrichment opportunities for underrepresented students, (2) the below proficient and standard not met on math and science assessments by Black and Latinx students and (3) the need to increase number of Black and Latinx K-12 STEM achievers.
