Project Title: Children to Children Grief Support Program
Project Description:

Childhood grief has potentially long-term consequences on an individual’s childhood and adult life, as it is an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE). ACE shows a correlation between childhood trauma and adult health outcomes. The CDC found that children’s developing brains and central nervous systems are so profoundly affected by ACEs that they are the cause of many chronic diseases, most mental illness and most violence. Though this is disheartening, research has shown that creating and sustaining safe, stable, nurturing relationships and environments for children and families can prevent ACEs and help children reach their full health and life potential. Strategies identified by CDC include social-emotional learning, parent/caregiver support, and peer support. Tu Nidito’s Children to Children (CTC) bereavement support program meets this need, offering comprehensive support groups that benefit youth ages 3 ½ – 18 who have experienced the death of a loved one. Through CTC, participants receive targeted curriculum that helps normalize their grief, and provides tools for processing their emotions, all in a supportive setting with trained volunteers and the support of their peers. Regardless of families’ economic situation, Tu Nidito’s services are always offered at no cost, in English and Spanish. While the CTC group model is child-centered we extend support to parents and caregivers, as we recognize that grief impacts the entire family unit. Children are separated into groups with their peers in order to provide age-appropriate support: Littles (3½ – 7), Middles (8 – 12), and Teens (13 – 18), while parents and adult caregivers attend a concurrent support group, where they gain a better understanding of grief, including strategies on how to best support and communicate with their child(ren) throughout their grief journey. Together, families find support so that they can support one another and live healthy, productive lives.
