Project Title: Handicap Accommodations Program
Project Description:

The goal of the MPFC “Handicap Accommodations Program” is to provide grants to families with disabled children who cannot afford handicap accommodations on their own. The program was created in 2018, when our foundation first began operating. This program offers funds for wheelchairs, walkers, medical devices, transfer systems, and more. 100% of the children will make progress with their personal struggles through this program, which has a significant impact on each child for the rest of their lives.

Our foundation assesses an application based on various criteria. We ask if they have a doctor or therapist referral for the item requested, if it can be covered by health insurance, how long the item will be in use for, and how it will benefit the child. 90% of the families who apply do not have health insurance that covers the cost of these medical devices. As a child grows, it becomes very costly to frequently buy new handicap items. The cost of these devices can vary from $1,000-$8,000. This can quickly add up for a family who is already paying for doctor’s visits, therapy programs, and medication for a child who has disabilities. Low-income families cannot afford to upgrade their child’s handicap accommodations. Oftentimes we find that children are stuck with the incorrect device that does not properly accommodate them.

Examples of the accommodations we provide are adaptive strollers, wheelchairs, adaptive bicycles, shower chairs, shower lifts, walkers, vibrations boards, and bioness devices. These accommodations help create more independence and comfort for a child with disabilities. It also eases the burden on the parents who usually have to physically transport their child when they outgrow their handicap device. This allows the family and child to have more freedom in their own home and community.
