Project Title: Palm Beach Symphony Music Education Program
Project Description:
The Palm Beach Symphony (PBS) Music Education Program provides high quality, equity focused, inclusive and accessible music educational programming that connects musicians to kids and kids to music.
In partnership with the Palm Beach County School District, the PBS provides students instruments, high
quality orchestral music experiences, music education workshops, specialized music training by professional
musicians, mentorship and performance opportunities. The music education program increases student’s cultural awareness, soft skills, instrument performance, and knowledge of musicians, music, and instruments.
PBS In Schools Music Education program is offered in Palm Beach County Title 1 schools and recurs annually.
If funded, the program will be able to partner with more Title 1 schools and expand our reach in the Glades
region.
Title 1 School students face significant barriers to accessing music education including lack of music exposure, competing academic demands, varying degrees to which parents and schools place value of music education and limited financial resources. According to the Palm Beach County School District, 65% of students are classified as economically disadvantaged and lack adequate financial resources to provide for their basic needs including food and shelter. In addition, music education is no longer a required subject in middle and high school, and elementary students are only required to participate in music class 30 minutes
per week. As a result, student’s participation in music programs has declined significantly even though music training has been proven by multiple studies to increase academic achievement and soft skills.
