Project Title: After School Program
Project Description:
KidWorks operates from three centers in Santa Ana, serving students and families living in some of the toughest and under-resourced neighborhoods where services are most needed. These neighborhoods are considered "hot spots" for gang violence and have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic, experiencing higher incidences of illness, death, and lost income. 64% of Santa Ana households spend more than 30% of their income on housing, so it is common for two to three families in these communities to live together so they can afford even a small apartment. Furthermore, 50.6% of these families have a parent who graduated from high school and 11.1% have obtained at least a Bachelor’s degree. KidWorks operates a neighborhood-based year-round After School Program that serves up to 400 predominantly Latino K-12th grade students with a goal that at least 90% of students graduate from high school on time and enroll in college. KidWorks walks side-by-side with each student, surrounding them with love and hope, to help them successfully navigate their life’s journey. KidWorks’ preschool, after-school, and college support programming takes a holistic approach to engage students in activities “from Pre-K to B.A.!” For the past eight consecutive years, KidWorks students have achieved a 100% high school graduation rate, with 73% of KidWorks college students are on track to graduate with a degree (compared to 27% of 1st generation college students nationwide). Students participate in homework help, Leader in Me lessons, arts, sports, and college exposure activities. The After School Program provides a safe and supportive environment that promotes learning and builds resiliency. As students build self-confidence, they begin to see themselves beyond how well they do on tests at school. They see who they are as a person, a friend, and a leader.
