Project Title: Space Studies Curriculum Development
Project Description:
The Open Space Foundation maintains that spaceflight activities benefit the planet and all humans through earth sciences, communications, agriculture, and more. The global space economy, now more than 500 billion dollars, will double in a few years, causing a labor shortage in many disciplines.
The (already existing) educational deficit affects all areas, not just STEM; it must be addressed ahead of the university level. By analogy: In 1993, not all students had knowledge of the Internet; but within five years, such ignorance was unacceptable, even crippling. We perceive a tipping point, where "Space 2023 is like Internet 1993." Communications specialists, managers, administrators, entrepreneurs, lawyers, and others will all need a basic understanding of the space economy. Children now in elementary school will work in orbital construction, ground-based support, even living and working on the moon.
OSF is working to develop a "Space Studies" curriculum for high schools, beginning with a set of 60 lesson plans written to national standards, suitable for use in public and private schools as well as in home schooling. The first focus will be more math/science related but must expand to include non-engineering fields including law and medicine as well as "soft skills": Public relations, human resources, and other careers. Students must have a cultural framework that is human-centered and humanitarian, integrating space into daily life, preparing for the future while staying grounded in the present.
Eventually, "Space Studies" should be a dedicated set of two or more courses, not just incorporated into existing science classes. We have already begun developing these materials; the first 60 lessons will be completed by October 2023 and offered for educational system use beginning in January 2024. Later, we intend to add 60 more lesson plans, workbooks, online materials, and two textbooks by January 2025.
