Project Title: Hip Hop for Change – The MC Program
Project Description:

Education Department: In 2021, our programs reached over 8,000 students from K-12th grade through our workshops, presentations, assemblies, and full-day conferences. We hire Bay Area-based Hip Hop artists and train them to be Hip Hop educators and trauma-informed facilitators while delivering a culturally responsive curriculum.

Our Education Department breaks down barriers between youth and justice issues that affect their lives and communities by using Hip hop as a vehicle. We offer several programs and workshops, teaching the history, principles, and Hip Hop Cultural mechanisms through these new practices for positive introspection and expression. Around half of our programming has been provided free of charge to under-resourced institutions. In addition, our education department hires Hip Hop artists within our community, training them in trauma-informed care to better serve our youth.

HH4C’s educational curriculum has reached over 26,000 students nationally, through the facilitation of Hip Hop lectures and camps catered toward BIPOC youth. Examples of our educational programs include THE MC: Theory of Hip Hop Evolution, a five-part experimental K-12 curriculum that details the history and social impact, of Hip Hop; Agents of Change, a week-long naturalist camp in partnership with East Bay Regional Parks District that increases environmental access for marginalized youth; Write On, a comprehensive Graffiti curriculum for K-12 youth that focuses on cultural expression.
