Project Title: Mental Wellness Programming at Title-I Schools
Project Description:
Mindful Life Project plans to bring our mindfulness-based social emotional learning (SEL) programming to two elementary schools in San Jose, CA. Social-emotional learning is the teaching of key inter and intrapersonal skills that are essential during the transitions of childhood and adolescence. SEL helps young people learn social awareness, decision making, self awareness, and emotional regulation. When young people form and grow their social-emotional skills, they are better equipped to handle stressful situations and increase their personal wellness. Across the education system, schools lack funding for mental health support for students and teachers. Students, particularly students in low-income communities that MLP prioritizes to serve, face elevated levels of stress and trauma due to historic marginalization, racial bias, inaccessible healthcare, redlining, and food security. MLP’s programming provides mindfulness-based SEL programming that helps form overall wellness skills that aid in the healthy acceptance, recognition, and management of emotions. MLP helps cultivate an entire ecosystem of wellness for the entire school community, with specialized programs for students, teachers, and families. For students, we offer two programs: Mindful Community and Rise Up. Mindful Community is a whole-school program where MLP’s instructor delivers a SEL-based mindfulness lesson weekly to every classroom. These lessons are trauma-informed, developmentally appropriate, data-driven, and culturally relevant, and allows the school population to develop a foundation of wellness. Rise Up is a small group program that brings together high-need students in twice weekly pull out sessions. Rise Up allows students to dive deep into mindfulness practices to develop healthy emotional processing and release mechanisms using expressive arts, yoga, and performing arts. For teachers and families, MLP provides regular wellness sessions that focus on specific topics relating to each subpopulation. In total, MLP helps school communities develop wellness practices, leading to school environments of personal growth and learning.
