Project Title: Fund My Future PGH
Project Description:

Fund My Future PGH helps families start their savings journey. By providing a monthly prize pool, supportive personal assistance, and access to financial education sessions for parents, children from birth to age 18 are given a jump-start toward their future. Fund My Future PGH serves all families in Allegheny County by helping them save for college and other post-secondary goals. Saving for their children is often a first step toward financial stability and generational wealth; we are providing this opportunity for the families of our county, leading them to continued success.

Research shows that children with savings accounts in their names are three times more likely to attend college and four times more likely to graduate. We have seen children graduating from high school familiar with the practice and power of saving. Parents already have the desire and intention to save for their children; many just aren’t doing it, mostly because their attention and energies are taken by other priorities. We provide the nudges, incentives, and assistance to make it happen. We make it fun with chances to win cash prizes each month; and we communicate encouragement and reminders regularly via email, text, voicemail, newsletter, and social media.

We form partnerships with nonprofit organizations that serve the community, such as libraries, churches, schools, afterschool programs, daycare centers, local elected officials, family support centers, and housing communities that serve low- and moderate-income families.

This innovative program model of combining incentives with assistance and leveraging community partnerships, has proven effective at both reaching our target population and achieving long-term change. In the past ten years, we have grown participation to 4,600 families. 83% are women, 67% are African American, and 74% have incomes under $60,000.
