Project Title: Systems thinking in K-12 classrooms for more engaged students and a better world!
Project Description:
Compass Education proposes to invite 100 public school educators to participate in the globally recognized professional development program; Teaching and Learning for a Better World: A Systems Thinking Approach. This program was designed by an international team of education experts and utilizes the Compass Tools, a suite of systems thinking tools which transforms education from a collection of isolated subjects to integrated contextual learning and empowers students with the 21st century skills needed to feel engaged, hopeful and prepared to work together to build a better world.
The Compass Tools support educators to bring complex, real world topics into their classroom and curriculum. System thinking develops learners’ understanding of the structural elements underpinning unsustainable systems responsible for climate change, poverty and other challenges that we face. It develops learners’ ability to recognize critical leverage points for transmuting these systems into more sustainable ones to take impactful action. Additionally, it fosters vital social-emotional competencies such as self-awareness, relationships with others, and connectedness to the communities in which they live. The systems thinking skills learned and practiced in engaged classrooms prepare future forward young people for success in education and their careers.
Compass Education proposes to form a pilot program cohort of 25 educators from the state of Florida, to participate in the workshop and support each other as colleagues committed to use the innovative educational Compass Tools in K-12 classrooms. One educator directly impacts the learning and outcomes of approximately 3000 students during their career. This funding request could impact 75,000 students.
With support from the Hermanowski Foundation, we can accelerate this critical work to provide public school educators with modern systems thinking tools to support students as engaged and empowered citizens of today, with the abilities and competencies to become the leaders of a better tomorrow.
