Project Title: SC Career Kids (SCCK) After School Career Club
Project Description:

SC Career Kids (SCCK) After School Career Club (Career Club) allows elementary students to explore careers, build relationships with experts, make connections outside their family circles, and make informed decisions about future careers.

Per the SC Chamber of Commerce, “critical needs” jobs account for 45% of today’s workforce, yet only 29% of people have the necessary skills for these jobs. The overwhelming consensus among SC employers is that many of our state’s graduates lack critical thinking skills and the ability to communicate effectively, solve problems creatively, work collaboratively, and adapt to changing priorities. SCCK is committed to evolving our career ecosystem and helping cultivate a robust workforce.

Serving Lexington/Richland School District 5 (L/R5) K-5 students, Career Club offers engaging exploration activities alongside a mentor from local business, industry, and the community. The 16 SC Career Clusters are represented weekly allowing students to learn about various careers, examine how each is important, and better understand which may require a professional degree or licensure, college degree, or technical college training, certification, or other trade skill.

For the 2022-23 school year, Career Club is running in 6-week cycles. Led by a knowledgeable, certified teacher and experienced volunteers, each Career Club session begins with a background-building activity to introduce the featured career. Divided into developmentally appropriate small groups, young learners explore tools of the trade and the work environment, engage in career-related vocabulary activities, learn character traits necessary for success, and work on a relevant project or activity alongside a career expert. Students record their learning and discuss their findings, questions, and connections.

Partners include the SC Department of Education, L/R5, Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission, Greater Irmo and Chapin Chambers of Commerce, Midlands Tech, and many career mentors.

This grant would scholarship 16 K-5 students for a full year of Career Camp in 2023-24.
