Project Title: Diverse Texts for Diverse Students
Project Description:

The Diverse Texts for Diverse Students project is a request that will support purchasing multiple copies of diverse texts for students in fiction and nonfiction categories. We endeavor to purchase a range of genres to meet students’ interests and lexile levels. Texts that reflect the diverse experiences of young people are essential for their literacy and identity development during this crucial period of adolescence. This project request is driven by our desire to ensure that students have access to texts that are “windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors” (Sims Bishop, 1990) which enable them to see the world around them and see themselves reflected in the works they read. Using this measure celebrates the cultures of our students, honors their diversity, and builds empathy.
