Project Title: Zenzele Learning Project
Project Description:
Equity Splash is a non-profit organization with the goal to empower the Black/African American community. The goal of this program is to increase underserved and underrepresented black children’s interest and confidence in science, math and reading in order to help them to achieve their dreams and goals.
The work focuses on dismantling and disrupting structural racism and intersecting systems of oppression through leadership development and advocacy for promotion of equity. The primary activities of the organization are youth development. Equity Splash provides a safe environment where every young Black and BIPOC child can develop their mindsets, personal habits, and STEAM skills through culturally relevant conversations and interactions necessary for a healthy and successful life. By connecting children to mentors from their own diaspora and other community leaders, they will develop their self-agency. Ultimately this will contribute towards reducing generational racial trauma and disparity gaps. This program builds on the notion that informal learning spaces can provide African American students with access to quality and culturally relevant STEAM activities that are often unavailable to them in their schools. The objectives of this program are to increase participants’ interest in STEM fields and their confidence in their abilities to master science and math subjects. Unique features of this program are (1) the use of social history (i.e., learning about Black people’s contribution to STEM), (2) culturally responsive coaching and mentoring (i.e., anchoring STEM learning within the cultural context of black peoples’ lives), (3) mentorship from diverse scientific role models, and (4) the development of transferable STEM skills through various methods including stories, mentorships, field trips, homework assistance and job shadowing where applicable.
