Project Title: Domestic Violence Diaper Assistance Program
Project Description:

The Athens Area Diaper Bank strives to eradicate diaper need by providing diapers to low-income families in the Athens area while raising public awareness of diaper need and its impact. To date, AADB has provided 1.25 million diapers to over 30,000 children.

Diapers are expensive, costing over $1,000 each year per child, yet government programs like WIC and food stamps don’t assist with diapers. This expense is a cost that 1 in 3 families in the US struggle to afford. Families struggling to afford diapers families report reusing soiled diapers, rationing diapers by delaying changes, or creating diapers out of household items, such as old clothes or trash bags. These options have severe implications for children’s physical health, including persistent diaper rash, UTIs, and staph infections. Furthermore, diaper need puts caregivers at risk for increased parental stress and prolonged economic hardship, which can lead to toxic stress in developing children.

The fallout of diaper need combined with the destabilization of domestic violence puts women and their babies at risk of numerous mental and physical health complications. We are looking to prevent these devastating outcomes by partnering with two domestic violence shelters to provide diapers to residents struggling to afford them. Through this partnership, we anticipate providing ~20,000 diapers, impacting over 500 children and their mothers.

This project will have several key outcomes.

1. Increase the health of babies
2. Increase the overall well-being of families receiving diapers
3. Decrease the stress of caregivers
4. Enable the domestic violence shelters to execute their mission

We will measure and track our progress towards these outcomes using bi-annual surveys completed by representatives of the shelters as well as families receiving our diapers.
