Project Title: After School STEAM enrichment program
Project Description:

The Friedberg JCC runs after-school programs in several districts in South West Nassau County. The programs serve a racially and economically diverse group of children and provide safe places for them to be while their parents work. The programs offer homework help, enrichment classes, and outdoor play. They are fee-for-service, but many children attend on scholarship or through Department of Social Services assistance.

We want to add STEAM programming as part of the enrichment classes. We will focus on Science, Technology, Art, Engineering, and Math, which helps build critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, literacy, leadership, and flexibility skills. Children enrolled will participate in weekly STEAM workshops, engaging in activities such as coding, maker space, robotics, and building. The programs will be stocked with materials for these activities and storage units will be purchased to house the supplies.

STEAM programs allow children to work together to solve programs, which builds Social Emotional Learning (SEL). According to research done by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning, SEL learning increased students’ academic performance by 11 percentile points, compared to students who did not participate in similar learning opportunities. In addition, students who participated in programs focused on SEL outcomes “showed improved classroom behavior, an increased ability to manage stress and depression, and better attitudes about themselves, others, and school”.

We believe that the after school programs are the ideal place for this curriculum because research shows that introducing children of all ethnicities and genders to STEAM concepts at a young age makes them more likely to choose professional careers when they get older. Since our after-school programs serve children from all ethnic groups and an equal number of boys and girls, we know that a STEAM enrichment program will help close the opportunity gap that many youth from underserved and underrepresented communities face.
