Project Title: KIDS FIRST! Film Critics
Project Description:

We are seeking funding to support educating tweens and teens to become active members of the KIDS FIRST! Film Critics program. This project will provide training and on-going support for 4 tween and teens from low- and moderate-income families, 2 from Florida and 2 from the Washington DC area. These young people will be trained as journalists and entertainment reporters and coached with every assignment they undertake for a period of one year, beginning September 1, 2023.

Established in 2011, KIDS FIRST! Film Critics are nationally recognized as an authentic source of media reviews from young people, ages 9 to 20. These youth are trained by our professional educators and coached by both writing and video instructors starting with an initial 6 day boot camp, and continuing with every assignment. Beginning with something that they all love – watching films or online media – the kids learn to “watch, analyze, and review” what they watch and learn the skills needed to express their opinions with honesty, integrity, and insight. Recent reports from six graduates of the KIDS FIRST! program with young adults who are now actively working in the entertainment and journalism industry have shown the positive effects that their experience made on their success in college and now, as working professionals.

Their training takes place in a safe and supportive environment of peers and role models where students learn to see themselves as entertainment journalists. They learn the concepts of responsible journalism and open source reporting that forms the basis of all their future reporting. They work in teams to complete projects that include real media releases.
