Project Title: 2024 Performance Outreach Program (POP) Tour
Project Description:
La Jolla Playhouse’s Performance Outreach Program (POP) Tour is a comprehensive theatre education experience built around a 45-minute play for young audiences that is commissioned and developed by the Playhouse specifically for San Diego children. Each year, the POP Tour travels throughout the county, touring schools, libraries, and community centers and serves approximately 20,000 local students, many of whom have never seen a play or experienced live theatre. The set, costumes, and props are designed to be fully mobile and can be staged in any space in 60 minutes.
The POP Tour’s intended impact outcomes are to fill the void of arts in public schools, provide opportunities to experience performing arts at an early age, discuss relevant and timely social issues, encourage empathy and social-emotional learning, introduce children to careers in theatre , and deliver professional training to classroom teachers so they can incorporate theatre-informed learning into core curriculum.
The POP Tour accomplishes our intended outcomes by presenting many opportunities for interaction with the arts through pre-performance workshops led by Playhouse teaching artists, Playhouse-produced interactive online resource guides, and post-show Q&As that explore the themes of the play and theatre in general. The Playhouse provides themed lesson plans that are tied to both California State Standards for Visual and Performing Arts and the Common Core curriculum.
The 2024 POP Tour, Abeni in the Tall Grass by Jonathan Norton, is about a solitary man cultivating a food forest and a fifth-grade aspiring horticulturist, Abeni. Both discover that, like plants need water and light to flourish, people need friendship and community to thrive. Relevant themes include food cultivation, intergenerational relationships, social anxiety, and the impact of isolation.
