Project Title: After-school Arts Program and Community Outreach Expansion
Project Description:

Founded in 1978, Visual Art Institute (VAI) is one of the oldest after-school art programs in Utah. Our purpose for existing is: “Improving the technical art skill sets, critical thinking ability and overall well-being of our students.” Most of the individuals VAI serves are youth ages 5-18. We are committed to providing affordable art education by providing instruction in drawing, illustration, screen-printing, acrylic, watercolor and oil painting, digital arts, mixed-media, and ceramics. We pride ourselves in investing in art faculty who have years of experience in their fields and have a commitment to artistic excellence. In 2022, VAI art classes for youth reached 96% capacity. As we relocate to a larger facility (March 2023), VAI will be able to expand the number of youth classes offered and increase the scope of our on-campus and off-campus community outreach programs. Our goal is to become a partnership site for Promise SSL and support other local non-profit organizations.

VAI is committed to providing art programming to Title-I public schools, isolated and underserved communities by providing art experiences that promote an individual’s well-being. In January 2023, we began monitoring program participants’ well-being in teenagers through a partnership with West Valley Arts. Our partnership roster with organizations that serve low-income, physically, and mentally disabled individuals is expanding. In 2022, VAI created three new partnerships, which include the Rape Recovery Center, Ronald McDonald House, and The Inn Between. We are continuing collaborations with Neighborhood House, Salt Lake School District, Granite School District, and Canyons School District. In 2023, VAI began providing figure drawing and ceramics classes for Roots Charter High School and Eva Carlston Academy.

Our desire with this project is to increase art outreach programming with more community partners, along with increasing the total number of students we are able to teach.
