Project Title: Educational Touring Initiative
Project Description:

The ETI centers around the creation of two new educational productions that will tour directly to schools throughout the state of West Virginia. This project aims to reach students in all of West Virginia’s 55 counties and increase access to the arts while also uplifting the work of West Virginia artists. GVT will commission West Virginia playwrights for the development and creation of both productions in collaboration with the West Virginia Department of Education and learning objectives from existing school curricula. The first of these productions will target students in grades K-4 developing deeper understanding of social/emotional maturity leading to strong trauma healing tools. The second production is centered around WV history and targets students in grades 4-8 as a part of existing core requirements.

For many students, West Virginia represents an arts desert in which both geography and finances stand as significant barriers to participation. By touring directly to schools, ETI will operate within existing systems and meet the students where they are, all without any extra limitations placed on their time, location, or ability to pay. By overcoming these barriers through an exposure to the arts, students will receive a well-rounded education through a performance-style that incorporates a wide variety of artistic disciplines. The tour takes a three-pronged approach to engage students with the project:

1. Pre-production in class study guides
2. Performance followed by post-performance talk back sessions
3. In class workshops led by teaching artists that aid in practical applications of learning outcomes

Greenbrier Valley Theatre is committed to accessibility, and the Educational Touring Initiative allows expansion of programming across the state. In the first year of touring, ETI will travel through 2-3 schools per county. This puts the program in 130 plus schools after only one year, connecting over 42,000 students spread out amongst the entirety of WV.
