Project Title: Check and Connect
Project Description:
Serving All Vessels Equally, Inc. (SAVE) is a community-based organization dedicated to supporting, sustaining, and strengthening youth in Norwalk, CT.
Our goals are to create effective partnerships and creative programming that will turn problems into promises in our community. We provide specific social, psychological, and emotional/behavioral competencies that change attitudes, motives, and behavior and add value and empowerment to the lives of our youth.
Our programs are designed to:
• Reduce youth and gang-related violence.
• Empower parents of youth involved in disruptive and violent behavior with tools to guide them toward a more productive way of being.
• Connect clergy leaders with youth in one-to-one relationships.
• Get truant youth off of the street and back into the classroom or workplace.
• And to ensure that youth graduate high school on time.
Check and Connect (C&C) is about relationship building. Each student participating in C&C is assigned a mentor who seeks to build long-term, sustained relationships with participating students that will connect them with their school and guidance counselors, engage their parents/guardians and help them make academic progress. Studies show that C&C improves enrollment, attendance and the likelihood of graduation for students who are disengaged and at risk of dropping out of school. We currently have a part-time Coordinator for C&C who is working with 30 students at Norwalk High School. We have also expanded C&C to West Rocks Middle School to include several community mentors and parents. The program includes peer tutoring from students at Norwalk Community College, a weekly meeting with parents, mentors and students and a weekly meeting/tutoring with our cohort at NHS. At West Rocks we provide after school socio-cultural enrichment activities. The Coordinator is assisting in the development of wrap-around services from term time to summer school and the Coordinator works closely with Norwalk Public Schools personnel and administrators.
