Project Title: Power Up!
Project Description:
The YGIG is a middle school after-school and summer program for youth in grades 6 – 8. We provide a safe, fun learning environment where participants are able personalize their experience through academic, arts/humanities, college/career, health/wellness and STEM programming. We are located within a state of the art YMCA building in downtown Wilson, North Carolina. We want to provide Power Up! academic self-paced learning/support to our students in need and connect that with programming that piques their interest and makes them excited about learning. We have community support and many providers are donating their expertise and time to provide diverse programs. We do have a need for funding to support programming that is trauma-informed and there are providers that are not able to donate their time and require compensation. Transportation from each student’s school of origin is provided and the programs operate on a sliding scale with scholarship opportunities. Y-GIG is where youth gather, interact & grow; we are committed to serving youth and families in our community and work closely with Wilson County Schools; our youth coordinators have office hours in each public middle school. We are investing in our future leaders with the intent of seeing all children do their best, be excited about lifelong learning and explore new, fun interests. Through grant support we will be able to more fully meet their needs by offering stipends to providers, plan field trips, ensure we have adequate supplies, and purchase the software needed to provide the academic support some our students need. Middle school years can be challenging for parents and youth and it is our intention to tailor the Y-GIG program to meet the needs of our participants. We regularly gather feedback from our parents and students and make adjustments to our programming.
