Project Title: Destination Graduation
Project Description:
ASAYA’s Destination Graduation program provides sailing instruction and mentorship for at-risk teenagers from Emiliano Zapata Street Academy, an Oakland continuation school. Students participate in set internships throughout the school year, attending once-weekly sailing sessions; they learn to crew on-board a sailboat with a peer group and instructor supervision while also making correlations to their STEM-based high school curriculum. Students are taken through an introductory course, Basic Keelboat Competent Crew, and from there they can take American Sailing Association certification courses, of which fees for tuition are 100% subsidized by ASAYA. The goal is to give them tangible tools that will propel them towards new horizons following graduation. Students also receive P.E. and Elective credits through their high school. The goal is keeping at-risk youth out of the juvenile justice system and have them graduate high school through innovative engagement in sailing as a recreational hobby and as a vocational pursuit.
Oakland is an urban area with exorbitant costs of living, leading to high poverty and crime rates. Gang violence is prominent amongst Oakland schools; one high school reported 44% of those enrolled have contact with the juvenile justice system. 13% of youth under age 18 self-reported being involved in gang activity in a 2010 study, higher than the national average of 5% (OIGPC). It was also reported that 1,766 youth were on probation in Oakland in 2005, and the recidivism rate of children released from the California Youth Authority is 91%. Within OUSD schools during 2005-06, there were 2,422 chronic truants and 2,700 suspensions for violent incidents, and the dropout rate within OUSD was 31%. These statistics highlight the risk factors present in Oakland communities, and also highlight the need for out-of-school educational programs such as Destination Graduation, to provide educational and mentorship support to negate these risk-factors.
