Project Title: Helping Underprivileged, Dyslexic Youth Overcome Illiteracy
Project Description:
Haley’s Hope, an organization dedicated to helping young people navigate and prevent the adverse effects of dyslexia from limiting their potential, is partnering with Friends of the Children (FOTC) to provide children from lower-income families access to our dyslexia remediation services.
In the Fargo-Moorhead area, 11,000+ children struggle with dyslexia and 66% of current 4th-graders are below proficient reading achievement levels, many of whom likely have undiagnosed and/or untreated dyslexia. Furthermore, 35-40% of those not reading proficiently due to dyslexia are from lower-income families who lack the resources to access supportive services, such as our services. The future of these youth are dependent on accessing the learning resources they need to succeed. For example, dyslexic youth who go untreated are more likely to create classroom disruptions, be involved in behavioral incidents, and even develop harmful addictions later in life. They are also at extreme risk for a lifetime of illiteracy, which will negatively impact the state’s future workforce and economy. Identifying and providing early intervention and support for the one in five at risk of illiteracy allows us to mitigate these risks. FOTC uses a distinct, courageous, and proven model that connects youth who have a higher ratio of risk factors to professionally trained mentors, known as Friends, from as early as age four through high school graduation. Friends advocate and help amplify the voices of program participants and their families, who often become voiceless amid systemic failures, and help them access the resources they need to excel. Considering dyslexia is the most common language-based learning disability, affecting 15-20% of people, we assume FOTC has 10-13 students who need appropriate early intervention instruction. Therefore, Haley’s Hope respectfully requests $4,595 to underwrite the assessment fee ($275) and a 72-session tutoring fee ($4,320) for one student referred from FOTC.
