Project Title: Experiential Music Program
Project Description:
In partnership with two local music educators, Roots will provide 24 students in grades Kindergarten through 4th and up to 15 preschool age community members during each semester with weekly experiential opportunities to interact with sound, instruments and culture through hands-on in person instruction and small group ensembles. In addition to instruction in world music and related cultural tie-ins, emphasis will be placed on the music as a means of self expression and a tool to support social emotional well being. Through a newly established instrument lending program, children will also have the opportunity to explore guitar, piano, ukulele, voice, or percussion during 1:1 individual lessons. Music instruction will be introduced in a manner that makes it accessible to a variety of learning styles, including students with auditory sensitivity and diagnosed learning disabilities. Roots believes access to high quality Music Education has numerous benefits including: the development of reasoning and language, improved coordination, emotional development, enhanced auditory skills, improved creative thinking, opportunities to learn teamwork, increased engagement in school and is committed to prioritizing music education in our programming. Outside of direct instruction, the Experiential Music Program will also support children in the production of a Winter and Spring gathering where they will have the opportunity to share their knowledge and most importantly, their joy, with their families. Outside of the many intellectual, psychological, and physical benefits of music education, Roots believes that fostering a sense of community support is perhaps one of the greatest indicators of future success.
