Project Title: Health and Nutrition: Focus on Families
Project Description:

HACER’s programs focus on the most pressing needs of low-income families and individuals in our community: food, affordable housing, and access to health services and other community resources. Operating since 2010, HACER’s La Casita food pantry program’s main objective is to make nutritious food available to food insecure families and individuals. We distribute nutritious food twice a month (1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month). Recipients utilize an app and may receive food as often as needed. We have also added a less formal distribution on Sundays for those who are unable to make it to our regular distributions. Additionally, our staff or volunteers routinely deliver food to those who are housebound and unable to attend our distributions.

HACER maintains partnerships with Feeding South Florida and the Palm Beach County Food Bank and receives donated food from Goya and the United Way. HACER also makes direct food purchases, such as purchasing turkeys for our annual Feast of Giving event. During The Feast of Giving, held every November, we distribute food packages containing canned goods, dry foods, grains, pasta, fresh vegetables, and a turkey, so that families and individuals can partake in a special meal for the holiday. In 2022, the Feast of Giving event served 4,022 people (a total of 1,000 families) and distributed 27,000 pounds of food.

La Casita is our most active program. During the height of the pandemic, we served an unprecedented number of individuals, distributing 692,520 pounds of food to 42,492 people. Prior to the onset of the pandemic, it was typical for us to serve 150-175 families at each distribution. In 2022 we served 6874 families, 25,852 individuals, and distributed 438,259 pounds of nutritious food. We are currently serving between 350 and 500 families at each distribution.
