Project Title: Comprehensive Mental, Social, and Emotional Support Services for Families of Children with Cancer
Project Description:

We exist to improve the quality of life for children with cancer by supporting their families in the challenges they face. The majority of Jacob’s Heart children come from low-income homes with high levels of unmet, basic needs. Families struggle with regular access to emotional, social, and grief support activities and resources due to lack of transportation, work obligations, and access to affordable child care. Inequitable access to bicultural therapists with the skill and expertise needed to effectively address grief in children remains a challenge throughout the U.S..

Funding will help ensure that all eligible families are aware of and can access our free mental, emotional, and social support services and team of trained, caring counselors and clinicians – providing a foundation of emotional stability.
Individual Crisis Counseling and Psychotherapy – 200 sessions with bicultural psychotherapists, family support specialists, and interns with expertise in healing complex grief and trauma – Ongoing
Support Groups – 12 thematic support groups for parents expand to include concurrent interventions and healing activities for siblings – Monthly
Camp Heart + Hands and Forever Loved Grief Retreat – Summer and fall weekend retreats for families to share the joy and healing elements of being outdoors, and culturally relevant events to restore safety, security, and a sense of community.
Family Day Events – facilitated events (e.g. Dia De Los Muertos and candle lighting) throughout the year bring families together despite language differences and cultural differences to experience joy while their emotions are safely supported.
Teen Group – a safe inclusive space that fosters social connection, personal growth, and emotional resilience for young adults. Curriculum topics promote healthy lifestyles, habits, and attitudes supported by therapy, coaching, and counseling available on site. – Monthly
Art from the Heart – free, facilitated art sessions that combine emotional support and the creative process to promote socialization, connection, and healing – Quarterly

Total Project Budget: $228,960
