Project Title: Upower Trauma-Informed Coaching
Project Description:
Upower builds positive relationships through trauma-informed coaching using movement and play to empower and educate youth who are underserved. Our vision is to confront systemic and institutional inequalities adversely affecting underserved youth by providing access to the physical, social-emotional, and academic benefits of physical activity and play.
Upower works with underserved youth by partnering and collaborating with schools, detention centers, addiction recovery centers, migrant youth serving organizations, and affordable housing communities. These schools are under-resourced schools and do not have funds to provide physical education for their students which has been proven to be an essential component in youth character development. With the lack of funding and adequate care inside these schools, there is an increased risk of student disengagement, poor attendance, and dropout rates. (American Psychological Association, 2013).
Upower is requesting funding investments from the Hermanowski Family Foundationworks to continue trauma-informed coaching in under-resourced schools. Upower works to fill the educational gaps forced by the meso- and micro- level of a youth’s life. Upower takes a trauma-sensitive approach to promote youth development through movement, play and relationship building, teaching students important life skills such as emotion regulation, future planning, and positive identity formation.
