Project Title: Remembering Oakland’s Greatness
Project Description:

We are historians and preservationists of the beautiful culture of Oakland, Ca. We are steeped in the mission to preserve the artistic and historic contributions of this great city that has been plagued with homelessness due to rising costs of living. This has only been compacted by the deficit experienced during Covid 19. Currently as it stands there are cultural contributors such as artists, musicians and creators who are suffering in silence and their historical contributions are diminishing without record.
We believe in the gift of giving. The war on combating housing and hunger insecurity and cultural erasure is raging higher than ever before. We are planted firmly on the frontlines to ensure we do our part to end this actuality taking place every day in our beautiful community. We mobilize our teams of volunteers to make a real difference. Less fortunate is not defined as less human.

We are proposing to hold a series of artistic performances that are free to the public to attend that showcase the artistic greatness or Oakland’s finest artists. Musicians, vocalists, performing and visual artists will be highlighted and presented to the community to document and appreciate of their societal contributions.

Remembering Oakland’s Greatness is a series of ten productions that are aimed at presenting and preserving the legacy of artistic greatness that was bread from this small metropolitan city. The cultural richness that is Oakland, Ca is one that is hard to compare and should be preserved. Musical greats such as Shelia E, Toni Tony Tone, The Pointer Sisters, En Vogue, Johnny Mathis, West Montgomery, Buddy Montgomery and Yancie Taylor are just a few names intricately connected to the artistic and cultural history of Oakland, Ca. Held at the historical Geoffrey’s Inner Circle, a longstanding live music venue that doubles as a historical chamber, is the perfect venue for such an undertaking. Being allotted this grant will allow us to pay artists (therefore assisting in their survival) and present these shows to the community to enlighten those who are unaware of these great contributions as well as furthering the preservation of a legacy of great art.

Our first objective is to do our part in serving the City of Oakland by preserving this form of artistic history and ensuring it doesn’t fade into the past. Culture and art are two of the most important forms of history and we as the current generation are tasked with it protection and preservation.
Our second objective is to involve the community and inspire a new generation of artistic leaders. The events that are proposed are free and open to all ages and community members from all walks of life. Our objective here is to promote community inclusion and exposure to a greater scope of artistic and cultural expression.
Lastly, we aim to assist the artists who are responsible for these great artistic contributions and assist them in their lives as cultural curators.
